Background
The crisis management workshop formed part of a week of crisis management activities at Aarhus University. It was designed to complement talks and classes on social media management, as well as compliment the other teaching on the EUMADE4LL project.
Specifically, the workshop was designed to explore a normally untaught subject – what we have named ‘transversal skills’. This collection of skills and attributes, ranging from emotional intelligence to time management, is normally learned in the workplace.
It was the intention of the workshop to introduce the EUMADE4LL students to these skills as a by-product of crisis management.
The 3-day crisis management workshop was designed as an immersive role-play event.
Here students would become employees of a fictional global food manufacturer named Will’s Foods Plc.
The premise
The students were to spend three days acting as if they were Will’s employees. Here they would be tasked with the challenge of managing a mis-labelling crisis for the organisation – an issue which, in the worst-case scenario, would become life threatening for consumers.
The crisis was introduced at the beginning of what was advertised as a global communications conference – this was intended as subterfuge, in order to bring an element of surprise to the event. Project partner Marc Rocca, acting as Global Vice President of Communication and associate Samantha Taylor, acting as Chief Executive Officer, were the key actors in revealing the crisis.
This was introduced following an introduction to Will’s brand from Marc Rocca. Here Sam Taylor was the bearer of the bad news.
